Over the weekend I took a break from quilting.

I relaxed on the deck, taking in all the
wonderful spring sounds!

 And doodled on these sneakers!

If the #2 pencil is so popular, why is it still #2?

I wanted to remember this Blog Hop.

Panic best described me on posting day.

And The Give Away!
Originally I was doing a drawing from a hat.
Oh! No--No--No
Due to the amount that responded I
tracked down Random.Org. counter to save my sanity.
(but again not knowing what I was doing there either)

Random.Org did its picking and

A Bit Twisted!

At our guilds Christmas meeting we brought
1 yard of our ugliest fabric.
Later we stood in a circle with a scissor
and a random yard of fabric.
When the music began, we passed the
fabric till the music stopped.
Then snipped and tore the fabric in half.
Keeping one half and passed the other half on,
 when the music began again.
Every time we kept half and the
other half was passed on.
Till we were down to a small piece.
We all ended up with 7 pieces.

Here is mine.

This became our Guild's Challenge Project.
The requirement was that it could not be any
 larger than a 8 1/2 x 11 inch piece of paper.
And three of the fabrics were to be used.
Plus you could add fabric as well.
We were to bring it completed to the May's
 meeting and a 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place
 was to be awarded.
Then all the pieces would be displayed at a local
Historical Society event dedicated to quilting
 in June.

So here is my Twisted Piece.
Photo not so clear!
The rust color is on the back and I used only the challenge fabric.

I did not place in any of the Top 3 Picks.
But I always Love a Challenge!
The theme was
"What Makes You Happy"
For me that is trying something new.
I have seen this technique and
it can be stunning.
However, I will need to practice this
more before I can use
 the word Stunning on mine!

If you want a great tutorial on a
 Twisted Piece visit
also known as Fabric Tucks.

Goodbye Winter & Hello Spring!

As much as I enjoy the cold gray days, fire lite,
calming music, and the hum of the sewing machine.
I am ready for spring and summer!
So....this is my final reminder of a winter.
While in Vermont, my mother and I took a day class.
This looks like where we have been skiing for the past 35 years.
We learned about free motion, and how to use reversed fabric.

This and the next 2 photos where done at day classes with Donna Clauer.
She is a incredible teacher and artist.
She held her classes at her summer vacation home in Ocean City, NJ.

All the pieces we painted by hand and her techniques of painting is done
in a very freeing and a non structured approach.

Everything was done on a blank piece of
fabric and you apply paint and tread.
It is my understanding that she has moved up around Lancaster, Pa.
and teaches at the quilt stores in that area.
I highly suggest a class!!!

Helen

Channeling Toughts!

Several have emailed asking about the quilt in the frame above.
Even had a phone request to discuss it.
Then comes a phone call asking me to help demo the same technique at our
guild meeting tonight.
This has all been in the past week.
I must be channeling thoughts on
English Paper Piecing!
Here is a full shot of the quilt.
It was a challenge quilt that was entered in a local guild's quilt show.
The guide lines, that I remember (there was more) were it could not be
much bigger than a standard piece of paper. And it had to include words.
My words are attached with bent metal wire and were:
Create, Imagine,Believe, Dream & Inspire.
I had sewn the tumbling blocks together using the English Paper Piecing Technique.
Each diamond was only 1 x 1 1/2 inches.

The quilting was micro meandering.

Here is a larger quilt that is EPP'd also.
Having all the papers ready before we left.
I started the whip stitching on my way to the airport.
And only worked on this while at the airport, during layovers or on the flight (many hours).
Since we were flying form Philadelphia to Hawaii, I was able to COMPLETE piecing this together only while traveling. Who wants to sew while in Hawaii--Not Me!
This is 24 x 18.

You can find so... many tutorials on English Paper Piecing.
By typing it in your search engine.
It is a great take-along project too.

Till We Quilt Again,
Helen

Here They Come!!!

Grandbabies!!!!!

But They Are Not Mine!!!!
YET

Friends are starting to have Grandbabies. I am so happy for them!

While in Utah, this past November, I got to revisit some quilt stores and find some new ones. I picked up a Moda Layer Cake. At our guild's retreat this past October I demonstrated a simple way to make a pinwheel. I have searched high and low for the link and I can not find it. So today I made a simple photo tutorial on making the block. Please excuse my photos--this was my first attempt at doing this.

This quilt is made with Moda Layer Cake cottons, soft baby blue Minkee (?) for borders, backing and binding. And a over sized Rick-Rack . The batting is 50%Bamboo and 50% organic cotton.

I loved quilting with this batting!

The quilting.

Detail of quilting.

Cut any size squares (2) that you choose. Mine are 10 inch. It can be any size but be

consistent through out the quilt you are working on.

Right sides together. Sew 1/4 inch all the way around the block.

Take ruler and cut corner to corner this way.

And corner to corner this way

Should look like this after it has been cut

Open each piece and it should look like this.

Either finger press or iron.

Rotate blocks to form a Pinwheel

And sew to form the block!!!

And it is that easy!!!!

Till We Quilt Again,

Helen
